JAIPUR: Jaipur may miss out on the golden chance to host the Federation of International Polo (FIP) World Cup 2012, thanks to the internal squabbling in the state polo fraternity.
With Rajasthan Polo Club (RPC) yet to set its house in order, several roadblocks have cropped up in Indian Polo Association’s (IPA) formal bid for the prestigious event that had the potential of showcasing the Pink City to the world and fast-tracking it to a world-class city status.
This is the first time that Jaipur — and India — could have hosted the Polo World Cup. The opportunity to host the tournament came Indiaia’s way as scheduled hosts Brazil opted out. India was listed as the next contender for the event. IPA will have to make a formal bid during the forthcoming FIP AGM scheduled in Buenos Aires on November 23.
By now, preparations for the AGM should have been through. But IPA, which had to send delegates to Buenos Aires, is constrained by infighting back home in RPC in Jaipur, and there appears little effort to bag the opportunity.
IPA honorary secretary Col Dev Dahiya, said no firm decision has been taken so far and final discussions will be taken shortly. “It could have been a big achievement for India, but we are still not sure about hosting the event,” he told TOI over the phone.
